Entrepreneur, Social or Commercial - Which are you?

Entrepreneurship can be social or commercial the question is what are you? Some will think that an entrepreneur is solely someone who is a successful business person and runs a business or several business. Did you know that the skills required to do so can also be applied to that of a social entrepreneur. How to best describe a social entrepreneur would be someone who successfully runs a non government organisation, NGO or association which is for the sole benefit of the community as oppose a commercial entrepreneur which is for the benefit of the enterprise or it's directors, owners and or shareholders. Can bridges be crossed between the two? Yes some commercial entrepreneurs have successfully set-up and run a commercial enterprise which whilst benefiting the directors, shareholders and owners also benefit the community.

As an example;

A successful family operated bus company in a rural location provides a very needed means of transport for the locals which otherwise would be isolated. They were charging moderate fares and running at a profit. They decided to improve their buses by adding ramps and other equipement which would make it more easy to transport handicapped travelers. They successfully applied and received several grants which financed the installation of the equipment in the busses and provide free transport for handicapped and elderly travellers, the bridge was crossed.

Another example of an Entrepreneur who crossed the bridge

Bill Gates - microsoft and now  Bill and Melinda Foundation

In late October 1955 Bill Gates was born into wealthy family in Seattle, Washington. His parents had wishes for him to become a lawyer one day but it soon became clear that Gates was a talented mathematician. At the age of thirteen Gates was excused from maths classes to pursue his interest in programming a General Electric computer on which he wrote his first computer program, an implementation of tic-tac-toe allowing users to play against the computer. His love and interest for code and software only grew in years to come. After scoring an exceptionally high score of 1590/1600 on his SATs, Gates enrolled at Harvard College in 1973, spending most of his time there using the school’s computers.

Two years later Gates dropped out of Harvard to start his own company with his friend Paul Allen which has become a world-renowned success. Now, come 2017, Bill Gates is the richest man in the world with a net worth of nearly $90 billion, the Chairman and CEO of Microsoft Corporation - the world’s largest computer software company, and an incredibly generous and active philanthropist. Setting up the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation with his wife to combat issues around the world, donating over $28 billion in charity and promising 95% of his entire wealth for charity, Bill Gates is sharing his success with those who need it most to make the world a better place for generations to come. An entrepreneurs route is not always a happy one and requires much dedication to the cause.

Born in 1971 in Pretoria, South Africa, to a dietician and an electromechanical engineer, Elon Musk grew up with a love for reading, spending hours in libraries everyday to feed his thirst for knowledge. When his parents divorced, 9 year old Elon moved in with his father who shortly after bought him a Commodore VIC-20 on which he taught himself how to program, selling the code for a video game he created for $500 at the age of 12. He was severely bullied throughout his childhood for being different, once even hospitalised.

At 17 he moved to North America where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in physics and a Bachelor of Science degree in economics. To pay for their 10-bedroom house rent during university, Musk and his housemates   hosted large parties where people payed entrance fees, making money from what the people want in the process. At 24 Musk moved to California to get his PhD at Stanford University but left after 2 days to pursue his entrepreneurial aspirations in the areas of the Internet, renewable energy, and space. Now Elon Musk is known as the multi-billionaire business magnate, investor, engineer, and inventor, Founder of PayPal, CEO and CTO of SpaceX, CEO and product architect of Tesla Motors, CEO of Neuralink, Chairman of SolarCity, and Co-Chairman of OpenAI. He has a vision to change the world and humanity. Some of his goals include reducing global warming through sustainable energy production and consumption, and reducing the risk of human extinction by making life multi planetary by establishing a human colony on Mars.

For the first time in Forbes' 94-year history, they have assembled the Impact 30:  yes a list of the world's leading social entrepreneurs. they are defining "social entrepreneur" as a person who uses business to solve social issues. Read their article at Forbes Social Entrepreneur
